Humans have about 300 active olfactory receptors devoted to detecting 1000 scents. The effects of inhaling essential oils create a spontaneous effect on the brain and cognitive functions, with the aim of improving a person’s health or mood. Once the fragrance of the essential oil is released into the air, it stimulates the olfactory system and the part of the brain connected to the sense of smell. As these molecules reach the brain, they affect our limbic system which is linked to our emotions, heart rate, breathing, stress, and hormonal balance. Similarly, molecules that enter the nose or mouth, pass through the lungs to other parts of the body. In this manner essential oils have a subtle yet positive holistic effect on various psychological and physiological aspects.
